Evelyn was interested in changing the world, Will was just interested in understanding it. Creating PINN was their shared passion. Their motive was not profit, but to rather create a technology that would benefit mankind. Because Evelyn and Will  did not take government funding, there was no chance that their work would be siezed by the government for its own purpose. 

 

Once uploaded into PINN, Will used his computational ability to illegally trade stocks for his own benefit, making $38 Million to give to Evelyn. This is in stark contrast to his initial stance of only wanting to understand the world. He used the profits to build Brightwood and another AI laboratory, a utopian society where his technological advancements would be able to flourish.
