Professional Ethics

Software Engineering Code of Ethics

Principle 1.01 states that the software engineer should be held fully responsible for their work. In that sense, Evelyn would then have to be held responsible for everything that AI will did, because AI Will can't be held responsible, and Evelyn did help create PINN as wel as connect Will to the PINN system.

Principle 4.01 states to "temper all technical judgments by the need to support and maintain human values." The idea of Will healing these people but also placing them as part of a system that can be then controlled by him, is not really maintaining human values, if he is taking their individual humanity away. The idea of Evelyn uploading Will to the AI system in the first place, doesn't follow this principle. By taking away everything that made Will human and uploading him onto the AI system, it completely made him a new species, a new unknown being.

Whistleblowing

Max is portrayed as a whistleblower in this film, because his actions and the actions around him reflect a whistleblower situation. Whistleblowers usually speak to their superiors first, stating what they have found and why it is wrong. Max did this when at first he warned Evelyn about the possible consequences and moral dilemma of uploading Will's consciousness at all. Then once again, after Evelyn had already uploaded Will, Max warned her to shut it off, and warned her that they didn't know if Will was really influencing the AI. The next step is when the superiors of the whistleblowers find a way of quieting them, by firing them usually. Evelyn kicked Max out of the project after he tells her to shut off the AI. After that, Max goes to a different audience with the problem, much like other whistleblowers. He speaks to Joseph who is in contact with the FBI and they plan together to take down the AI.
